Japanese Bobtail cat and kitten breeders and sales The JAPANESE BOBTAIL has been known throughout Japan and southeast Asia for centuries. The original breed came to Japan from the continent of Asia over 1000 years ago and has been the topic of much legend, folklore and art for many years. Artwork depicting a JAPANESE BOBTAIL with a raised, beckoning paw signified good luck. In 1602 Japanese authorities decreed all cats to be set free to deal with the rodent population threatening the silk-worms. Buying or selling cats was deemed illegal and the JAPANESE BOBTAIL became the "street cats" of Japan, living primarily on farms and in the streets. History shows he evolved into more of a companion animal over time, as more conteporary writings depict. Englebert Kaempler wrote in the 1700's, "It has no mind to hunt rats and mice, but just wants to be carried and stroked by women."

The JAPANESE BOBTAIL is affectionate and sweet-tempered. He is an active and intelligent cat, very talkative and enjoys "conversations" with his owner. He has a vast variety of tones and sounds which he uses and many legends talk of a "singing" feline. He is a very social creature with some more dog-like than cat-like qualities, as he enjoys learning tricks and quite often playing fetch, and actually enjoys walks on a leash or harness. He enjoys the company of his human counterparts and will demand his fair share of affection and interaction. He comes in a vast array of coat colors and patterns, and posesses a unique bobbed and kinked tail, more reminiscent of a rabbit's than that of a cat. The short tail is a body mutation, but unlike other breeds that have the a similar feature caused by a recessive gene, the JAPANESE BOBTAIL does not suffer from health problems and other abnormalities frequently caused by the gene as do the other breeds with the same mutation. Legend explains the shortness of his tail with a story which speaks of a kitten whose tail caught fire while sleeping. As he ran through the streets, much of the capital caught on fire, and after that the Emperor decreed the cats to have their tail removed as a precautionary measure.

A beautiful and fun-loving feline, the JAPANESE BOBTAIL is an affectionate addition to any household, especially those with children. His exhuberant personality makes him a joy to be around and he will enthusiastically be your lifelong friend and companion.

"An ordinary kitten will ask more questions than any five-year-old."
Carl Van Vechten
